There's a mysterious distance between us. Hewson and her family live in Killiney , in south County Dublin , in a mansion and grounds that overlook the Irish Sea and that have been expanded by purchasing the adjoining property. While her husband has provoked a variety of critical responses—some negative—assessments of Hewson have generally been favourable, characterising her as down-to-earth.

He is happy to do that; I am quite happy to make my own way around things. The Cranberries ' song " Time Is Ticking Out " was inspired by Hewson's work with Chernobyl Children's Project. Contents move to sidebar hide.

Random Irish News. Retrieved 28 November Fatherly compliments were rare in the Hewson family. Did Bob ever tell him he was proud of him and all his success? Iris never knew. The disclosure came after Bob was diagnosed with cancer a year before his death in One of the most dramatic episodes in the book is when Bono confronts his father about whether he truly loved his mother.

It is also startling that Bono instinctively knew the revelation about a half-brother before it landed. I love Scott and his mother Barbara.

Bono thinks that maybe his father is the reason he remains worried about whether people are listening to U2. Music was the thing that soothed his aching heart. It sounds like a line from a country song.

That is why he was attracted to the opera, because he was one, and I suppose he had the voice and this is how he gave it to me.

I would rather be famous and not be a celebrity if that were possible. What is it about older males that I would seek out their company, not just their songs? Nothing makes sense about U2 and our relationship with Ireland. We were and still are a social experiment. Like all good jokes, he sees a serious undercurrent beneath.

He believes U2 could have emerged only from a school like Mount Temple, itself a social experiment in his view. Or activists? You can have high ideals in your activism and your music, but you have to have a lower IQ when you are in business? One, the non-profit campaign group, and its predecessor DATA Debt, Aids, Trade, Africa , were co-founded by Bono and activist Bobby Shriver, with the objective of eliminating extreme poverty and disease in Africa.

However, this is precisely what the U2 singer says he does every September with the One campaign. Bono the activist makes no apologies for this strategy, but concedes it has been costly for the band. Bono: 'It has been very difficult at times to stay together.

We are actually doing something. And I respectfully disagree with them. But I get where they are coming from. But they know I am not a poser.

The four-man U2 team, with cabinets of silverware behind them million records and 22 Grammys , is of course still the same team that formed in , despite the potentially career-ending injuries and addictions and near-break-ups, all well chronicled in Surrender.

It would be almost impossible for that to happen because we just go after each other. The recording of U2 is like trying to catch lightning in a bottle. It is almost impossible and most of the recordings feel somewhat flawed to me, certainly my own role in them.

For Bono, finding new creative highs requires the fists to go up again. That is when you are in trouble.

As for the songs, he stands over them, and he is starting to appreciate the old albums more. He wants to start recording by the end of the year, after a city US and European book tour. But that will be the second book. Use your naivety. Use your black and white view of the world, because soon it will be colour, and full-colour bandwidth.

He is quite happy to keep annoying people, in full colour, with this new book and the promise of more albums.

Since , Bono has become increasingly involved with raising awareness of the plight of Africa and campaigning on its behalf. From to , Bono was involved with the Jubilee coalition, working as an activist on its Drop the Debt campaign. He met with U. Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summers , and with U.

Republican politicians such as Jesse Helms , John Kasich , Orrin Hatch , J. Dennis Hastert , and Dick Armey in an effort to secure bipartisan support for the U. forgiving the debt of developing countries. President George W. Bush and former Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin. The advocacy non-government organisation NGO DATA Debt, AIDS, Trade, Africa was established in by Bono and Bobby Shriver , along with activists from Drop the Debt.

Each company creates a product with the Product Red logo, and a percentage of the profits from the sale of these labelled products benefit the Global Fund. In , Bono recorded a version of " Don't Give Up " with Alicia Keys , with proceeds going to Keep a Child Alive.

Bono has spoken at numerous events on behalf of his activist efforts. He spoke at the 54th Annual National Prayer Breakfast on 2 February , encouraging the care of the socially and economically depressed and calling for an extra one percent tithe of the United States' national budget.

It featured an assortment of 20 different covers, with photographs by Annie Leibovitz of a number of celebrities, political leaders, and philanthropists, each showcasing their contributions to the humanitarian relief in Africa.

In , Bono lent his voice to One's animated series Pandemica , which was created to raise awareness of the importance of vaccines in ending the COVID pandemic and the inequalities in worldwide vaccine availability. In , Bono supported Ukraine's resistance to being invaded by Russia.

A poem written by Bono about Saint Patrick and the Russian invasion of Ukraine was recited by Nancy Pelosi at a White House event for Saint Patrick's Day , on 17 March The poem was widely derided by the public.

Bono has become one of the world's best-known philanthropic performers and was named the most politically effective celebrity of all time by the National Journal. On 15 December , Paul Theroux published an op-ed in The New York Times called "The Rock Star's Burden" cf.

Kipling's " The White Man's Burden " that criticised stars such as Bono, Brad Pitt , and Angelina Jolie , labelling them as " mythomaniacs , people who wish to convince the world of their worth.

In February , Bono responded to his critics by calling them "cranks carping from the sidelines. A lot of them wouldn't know what to do if they were on the field.

They're the party who will always be in opposition so they'll never have to take responsibility for decisions because they know they'll never be able to implement them.

Revenue from the Vertigo tour is funnelled through companies that are mostly registered in Ireland and structured to minimise taxes. Further criticism came in November , when Bono's various charity campaigns were targeted by Jobs Selasie, head of African Aid Action.

Selasie claimed that these charities had increased corruption and dependency in Africa because they failed to work with African entrepreneurs and grassroots organisations, and as a result, Africa has become more dependent on international handouts.

Bono sketches and paints as a hobby. He developed his art style by drawing and painting on photographs, which he learned from his father who used to add colour to black-and-white instant film photographs of his wife.

Describing Bono's interest in visual artwork, The Atlantic ' s editor-in-chief Jeffrey Goldberg said, "He just walks around with an iPad and sketches everything. Bono and his daughters Jordan and Eve provided original paintings for a book adaptation of Peter and the Wolf , which accompanied a musical release by Bono's friend Gavin Friday and Maurice Seezer.

A CD-book package was released in November Bono's paintings, which were inspired by the death of his father, were auctioned at Christie's in New York. Proceeds from the sales of the paintings and CD-book package benefitted the Irish Hospice Foundation.

Bono's drawings of his musical influences were featured in a December issue of The Atlantic in an article profiling him.

The following year, Goldberg commissioned him to illustrate the cover of The Atlantic ' s June issue for a story about Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Bono's artwork, a line-drawing sketched portrait of Zelenskyy in the colours of the Ukrainian flag, was inspired by protest art and political posters. Bono was an executive producer of Bill Carter 's documentary film Miss Sarajevo. Carter had previously enlisted U2's help in bringing attention to the Siege of Sarajevo during their concerts on the Zoo TV Tour.

It starred Jeremy Davies , Milla Jovovich , and Mel Gibson. In the musical film Across the Universe , Bono made a cameo appearance during a psychedelic sequence, portraying the character "Dr. Robert" and singing the Beatles' " I Am the Walrus ". Bono voiced a character in the animated musical film Sing 2 , the lion rock legend Clay Calloway.

The project will feature narration and music by Friday. Bono's memoir, Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story , was released on 1 November He promoted it with a city book tour across North America and Europe called "Stories of Surrender" that started on 2 November. In , Bono, along with the Edge, bought and refurbished Dublin's two-star bedroom Clarence Hotel , and converted it into a five-star bedroom hotel.

In , Bono, Ali Hewson, and designer Rogan Gregory co-founded the EDUN fashion label "nude" spelled backwards, to suggest both "natural" and the Garden of Eden.

Bono was a board member of the Elevation Partners private-equity firm, which attempted to purchase Eidos Interactive in and subsequently invested in other entertainment businesses. through Elevation Partners; his firm took a minority stake in Forbes Media, which encompassed the year-old business that includes Forbes magazine, the Forbes.

com website, and other assets. Bono was among those named in the Paradise Papers after he was identified as an investor in Nude Estates, which bought a shopping mall in Lithuania in and transferred ownership to Nude Estates 1 in Guernsey, in an apparent attempt to avoid tax.

Bono welcomed the subsequent investigation by the Lithuanian tax authority, saying that transparency was necessary and he had personally campaigned for it. In September , Bono joined the board of directors of Zipline.

William Fulbright Prize for International Understanding from the Fulbright Association in recognition of his activist efforts.

At the age of thirteen, Bono met Alison "Ali" Stewart , who was one year below him at Mount Temple Comprehensive School. We allow each other to pursue our goals.

I wouldn't want to be married to someone who wasn't happy with what they were doing in life, and B wouldn't either. I have learned a lot about what it means to be married, how great it can be if you persevere. We're very close. He says I'm very good with the dog whistle. Stewart and Bono married on 31 August [] [] in a Church of Ireland ceremony [] at All Saints Church in her home area, Raheny.

The couple have four children: daughters Jordan born 10 May and Eve born 7 July and sons Elijah Bob Patricius Guggi Q born 17 August and John Abraham born 20 May After leaving the Howth peninsula, Bono and Ali bought a Martello tower in Bray in northern County Wicklow , south of Dublin.

The house, Temple Hill, is located on the slopes of Killiney Hill and has views of Killiney Bay. Bono's childhood friend Gavin Friday lives next door. Bono and Ali also own residences in the south of France and New York. In the late s or early s, [ when?

Jobs had renovated it for his own use, but never moved in. Bono's got the soul of an ancient poet and you have to be careful around him. He can roar 'till the earth shakes. He's also a closet philosopher talks about the rightness, the richness, glory, beauty, wonder and magnificence of America.

In , when discussing his faith in Jesus Christ , [] Bono said that Christ was either who he claimed he was or he was "a complete and utter nutcase".

Bono is almost never seen in public without sunglasses, as he has glaucoma since the s; this also makes him sensitive to flash photography. If somebody takes my photograph, I will see the flash for the rest of the day. My right eye swells up. I've a blockage there, so that my eyes go red a lot.

So it's part vanity, it's part privacy and part sensitivity. In January , Bono was aboard a Grumman HU airplane flown by musician Jimmy Buffett named Hemisphere Dancer that was shot at by Jamaican police, who believed the craft to be smuggling marijuana. The aircraft, which sustained minimal damage, was also carrying Ali Hewson, her and Bono's two daughters, Chris Blackwell, and co-pilot Bill Dindy.

After seeing her with the group at a trendy Hollywood nightspot, journalist Ethlie Ann Vare commented that Ali looked "as out of place as a dairymaid in a brothel.

Hewson received a degree in social science, politics and sociology from University College Dublin in at age 28, giving birth to the couple's first daughter, Jordan, two weeks before her final exams. In late , following U2's participation in Live Aid , Bono and Hewson spent five weeks as aid volunteers in Ajibar during the — famine in Ethiopia.

In , Hewson participated in Greenpeace protests against the Sellafield plant for nuclear reprocessing , located across the Irish Sea in Cumbria, England. This involvement led her to become interested in the Chernobyl nuclear disaster of The Irish documentary, shown on RTÉ , highlighted the plight of fallout victims of the Chernobyl event.

Since , Hewson has been a patron of Chernobyl Children's Project International [34] shortened to Chernobyl Children International in , an organisation founded and run by Roche that works with children, families, and communities that continue to be affected by Chernobyl.

My biggest regret in life is that I never became a nurse because I'd be able to go out to all these countries and really help hands-on and really get stuck in.

She was aware from the outset that her circumstances would make her vulnerable to " ladies who lunch "-style remarks sometimes made against women, married to wealthy, high-profile men, who engage in charitable activities , but said, "People who criticise these women are probably giving in to cynicism, and I think if you get cynical about life, you lose the real meaning of it.

She returned to the Sellafield issue in , noting that while Ireland had no nuclear power plants itself, Belarus had been the most affected region even though Chernobyl was not in it, and that was "exactly what could happen in Ireland if there was an explosion at Sellafield.

In April , Hewson was one of the leaders of an effort which delivered over a million postcards demanding that the facility be shut down; recipients included British Prime Minister Tony Blair , Prince Charles , and Norman Askew , head of British Nuclear Fuels Limited.

As the postcard effort was reaching its peak, tabloid newspapers speculated that the Labour Party wanted to put Hewson up for the Irish presidential election of , [34] [41] with the Daily Mirror quoting an unnamed party insider as saying, "She's a mother of four but she has always had world issues at heart and she'd make the perfect candidate.

Hewson stated that she had not been approached, and that "It's not a serious proposition. It would obviously be a huge honour if I was asked to take on such a huge task, but for one thing I'm not sure I'm qualified, and for another I've got four small kids to bring up first. Higgins , won the post.

Notwithstanding this speculation, Hewson generally shies away from political comments in the media. Hewson has long advocated for a children's museum for Ireland, [7] inspired by a positive experience her daughters had at the Dallas Children's Museum in the mids.

In Hewson signed an open letter which the ONE Campaign had been collecting signatures for; the letter was addressed to Angela Merkel and Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma , urging them to focus on women as they serve as the head of the G7 in Germany and the AU in South Africa respectively, which will start to set the priorities in development funding before a main UN summit in September that will establish new development goals for the generation.

In , Hewson, Bono and designer Rogan Gregory co-founded the EDUN fashion label. Hewson emphasised that Edun would have to be profitable to be considered a success, but in this it struggled.

Hewson is also co-founder, along with Bryan Meehan , of Nude skincare — a luxury, natural skincare company. In , Hewson brought legal action in England against Stella McCartney for bringing out Stella Nude, a new eau de toilette version of the Stella perfume, saying that it amounted to copyright infringement of her own Nude Skincare.

In February , LVMH purchased 70 percent of Nude skincare. But we still have very big ambitions for the brand to go much farther.

Ali was literally kicking me out of bed in the morning, putting the pen in my hand. Hewson has served as at least partial inspiration for many Bono-authored U2 songs, going back to the track "Another Time, Another Place" from their debut album Boy.

The U2 song " Sweetest Thing " was written for Hewson as a gift because Bono forgot her birthday whilst recording with the band during The Joshua Tree sessions.

Bono wrote the lyric of the song " All I Want Is You " as a meditation on the idea of commitment. Bono has seemed to deflect those interpretations, saying that song is in part a hard-edged look at himself from the eyes of one losing faith.
