Every Ray Davies album has 2 or 3 true gems that most other songwriters would give their 'eye-tooth' for, but this album is consistently good, with a charm and a confidence that reminds me of, well, 'Muswell Hillbillies' - and that's going back 46 years; can you believe that - 46 years. It could be argued that this is a 'concept' album too, so what makes it so much better than the ones that have gone before?

It's very difficult to put my finger on it: perhaps Ray has given himself time to hone the songs properly, allowing them to mature like fine wine, or maybe it's because he's back in front of an excellent The Jayhawks band - most likely it's the combination of these and other components we can only guess at.

Either which way it works, and I am utterly grateful; I have grown old on this music and I never thought I would hear the like again. Dear Ray, personally, I don't think you should have accepted the Knighthood; you've never been the Establishment - but, outside of that, you don't often put a foot wrong, in my book - and Americana is your Masterwork.

Congratulations and thank you. I can thoroughly recommend this album not only to ageing, surviving, Kink's fans, but also to anyone who appreciates a well-crafted song, from Paul Simon to Father John Misty and many others in between. This is a genuine masterpiece. All OK. With an artist of Ray Davies' calibre you just have to be thankful he's still willing to communicate and excited to share his thoughts with us after all this time.
